Teach Kids to Read through Phonics Bingo
Bingo is a very popular way to make children familiar with the sounds or phonics by pronouncing letters or group of letters. I may be a bingo geek, but teaching kids with this method can be done very easily by anyone.
A child can learn the hard “k”, while keeping in view the different letters that spell this pronunciation like “c”, “k” or “ck”. To speak very frankly, teaching individuals with phonic systems has been a subject of debate in the US classrooms all through the mid 20th century.
However, now it is not seen as a problem and the modern teachers who teach a phonetics system use it in a variety of diverse classroom activities, especially when some students need some additional help. Teacher will usually teach the phonics system in a variety of different educational games like bingo.
When it comes to playing phonics bingo, the gaming features are almost the same as a traditional game of bingo, yet they may vary from site to site. Each student is handed a card that includes a 5×5 grid of squares with the object of completing a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line on the bingo card. The teacher calls out a word and the kids have to determine what spots that are able to mark. The main difference with Phonics Bingo is that instead of the squares being filled by numbers, they are filled with words.
Here are some of the ways you can teach children phonetic pronunciations and give them an edge on learning how to read:
- Fill up the bingo card with words and have the bingo caller call out partial words. Example: if you call out the word “ear”, the kids will place a mark over words like clear, bear, near, tear, etc.
- Call out a word and have the children put a chip over any words that the word rhymes with. Example: if you call out the word chair, than the kids will cover words like stare, fair or pear.
- Call out the word very slowly and phonetically and make the kids find the word. Example: if the word is clap, say it c-llllllll-aaaaaaaa-p.
